For people living behind the Iron Curtain, the radio was perhaps the most intimate and contradictory object of everyday life — at once the instrument through which the state delivered its ver- sion of reality, and the fragile means by which that reality could be undermined. Turned to the right frequency, the same device received Radio Free Europe, Voice of America, the BBC: other worlds, leaking through the static.

RESONANZRAUM is an audio-visual installation centered on a retrofitted East German radio. It offers a tangible interface to Cold War-era radio archives, letting visitors engage with the archive through the original technology of its era — dials, frequencies, static, the physical grammar of listening that shaped how this material was first received. Turning the radio‘s dials interrogates and deconstructs the form and function of an era‘s primary me- dia - along with its unique juxtaposition of official and dissident voices - and offers parallels to today‘s information landscape.
